We see it time and time again where an award winner wants to thank EVERYONE who made the award possible, but award shows are on a tough timeline, thus they cue the “Play off music”
Sometimes it is funny and sometimes it is disrespectful.
Canada was in an uproar over what happened at the Junos, when the Tragically Hip was accepting an award for GROUP OF THE YEAR. Band members Rob and Paul were on stage to accept the award…and yes they were talking for quite some time. That said, this is Canada’s band. This band announced less than a year ago that front man Gord Downie had a brain tumour. A band that toured across the country in the summer giving fans a chance to say goodbye. A band that has been around for decades. A band that inspired many musicians along the way.
There are some bands you do not play off…the Hip is one of them. Think back to the Grammy Awards…did Beyonce get played off? No…she did not.
Many were quick to share their opinions of the broadcast attempting to silence the Hip
Wow. The Junos just played off the Tragically Hip WITH A TRAGICALLY HIP SONG in the middle of acknowledging Gord Downie. Smh.— Said The Whale (@saidthewhale) April 3, 2017
Others said that the band should have been more mindful of time…and respected the other artists and performers. I guarantee if you asked any of the other artists in that room if they were cool that the Hip took a little extra time…they would have been just fine with it!
