School’s out for…some reason!
Faculty at 24 Ontario Colleges, including our very own Fanshawe College went on strike at 12:01am this morning. The strike affects over 500,000 students and involves more than 12,000 professors, instructors, counsellors and librarians.
Here are the facts/highlights so far:
- The College Employer Council, which bargains for the colleges, called the strike completely unnecessary. They insist their final offer was comparable to or better than recent public-sector settlements and that the union’s demands would have added $250 million in annual costs!
- The union (OPSEU) presented a proposal on Saturday that called for; improvements in job security, faculty to have a stronger voice in academic decision making and the number of full time faculty to match the number of faculty members on contract.
- Here is a list of the 24 colleges affected by the strike: Algonquin, Cambrian, Canadore, Centennial, Collège boréale, Conestoga, Confederation, Durham, Fanshawe, Fleming, George Brown, Georgian, Humber, La cité collégiale, Lambton, Loyalist, Mohawk, Niagara, Northern, Sault, Seneca, Sheridan, St. Clair and St. Lawrence.
Here’s a great video The Morning Show on Global explaining the strike and what students need to know about going to their campus!
It didn’t take long for reactions to flood social media with #ontariocollegestrike.
There were a very small number of posts in support of the strike.
today my university dream of having a midterm cancelled has come true but it's not as fun as I thought. teachers leave a lasting impact on their students, and I don't want my teacher to be precariously employed, for the same reason that I wouldn't want my doctor to be distracted worrying about whether they will be employed in 3 months. #standwithfaculty #ontariocollegestrike
Not surprisingly, the majority of the reactions were on the side of the students and pretty angry!
I know it's not 100% positive the Ontario Colleges faculty will strike on Monday; I just know this threat is looming over my school amongst many others and I wanted to share my thoughts. School is hard enough without strikes, & students are the ones who they effect the most. We put so much $$$ into our education - like shareholders, yet every time we ask our schools what's happening, we get hazy explanations, leading only to more questions. While I realize there are differences among faculty members, with issues to resolve, why does this have to hurt students? 👩🎓 📚 😨 👩🏫 👏 #myncstory #ontariocollegestrike #studentsmatter #whataboutthestudents #schoolstrike
Ontario students have started a petition to get some of their tuition reimbursed, so if you agree…you can sign below!
If everyone could take the time to go to change.org and search 'ontario college strike' and sign the petition for the students who are attending classes all over Ontario to be reimbursed for the days they miss, that would be awesome! It has officially been announced that the school will strike starting at 12:01 tomorrow morning. Thanks to everyone who takes the time to go sign the petition! #wepaytolearn #change #petition #strike #ontariocollegestrike #ontariocolleges ✍🏻🙌🏻
