Neil Portnow, the president of the Recording Academy, is in hot water for comments he made after Sunday’s Grammy Awards.
If you thought you saw mostly male winners on stage Sunday night that’s because women only won 17 of the 86 awards given out on Sunday. In fact, 90.7% of the nominees between 2013 – 2018 have been male!
After the awards show Neil Portnow was asked by Variety about the male dominance at the Grammy’s throughout the years and his response was… well not great if you ask me.
“I think it has to begin with women who have the creativity in their hearts and souls — who want to be musicians, who want to be engineers, who want to be producers, who want to be part of the industry on the executive level — to step up,
‘Step up’ were the two words that caught everyone’s attention. Considering all that has been going on this year… that perspective and that word choice rubbed a lot of people the wrong way.
But P!nk took the high road and responded to the comment on Twitter – and I say GO GIRL GO!
P!nk wasn’t the only celebrity who responded to Portnow’s comments.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Another powerful woman, leading by example. We ALL have a responsibility to call out the absurd lack of equality everywhere we see it. I'm proud of ALL the women making incredible art in the face of continual resistance. ✊🏻— KATY PERRY (@katyperry) January 30, 2018
